The Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) has established a 60 day consultation period to receive feedback from the trucking industry on version 1.3 of the Technical Standard for Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs). That consultation period ends on November 12, 2024.
Use of Electronic Logging Devices
Electronic Logging Devices are used to record information about a driver's time to document their compliance with the Hours of Service rules. These rules set the maximum working hours for commercial drivers to insure that they stay safe and alert when on duty.
Who Must Use an ELD
Commercial vehicle drivers who cross provincial or territorial borders must use a certified ELD to record driver duty status instead of using paper records. Drivers who operate within a province or territory may choose to use either paper or ELD records.

Once the consultation has ended, the CCMTA will review all comments and ask for clarification if necessary.
Approval and Implementation in 2025
Version 1.3 of the Technical Standard for Electronic Logging Devices will then be approved and published in both official languages sometime in 2025. In addition, the FAQ on the standard will be updated.
A transition period will be established prior to the implementation of the updated standard.
