I recently passed the scene of what appears to be a serious motorcycle/car accident on the Connector between Cumberland and Courtenay. There were 3 police cars there and very professional traffic control devices and flag people. The investigation appears to be underway.
Perhaps you saw news coverage of the out of control commercial truck collision on the Coquihalla Highway last Friday. Witness accounts from the scene speculated that the combination appeared to have lost it’s brakes and may not have stopped at the mandatory brake inspection pullout nearby. No doubt this will be either confirmed or disproved when the investigation of the incident is complete.
The city of Sao Paulo, Brazil might have one answer to the problem of distracted driving, a complete ban on outdoor advertising. Research shows two things: drivers not focused on the task of driving are hazardous and electronic billboards draw a driver's attention through more and longer glances. Just how dangerous this might be appears to be a very complicated task because of the number of variables involved. The conclusions of the following reports indicate that lateral control of the vehicle is affected and drivers can be distracted for a dangerous period of time.

Our Mobile Home Park needs a left turn lane off Casorso road in Kelowna BC.
Casorso Road is a reasonable volume road with connections to schools, shopping centers, churches, residences, and other normal destinations.
As it passes by our 130 home park, very dangerous traffic activity occurs at the main entrance/exit.
This case examines a collision between a cyclist, Kyle Ilett, and a driver, Leah Buckley, at the intersection of Admirals Road and Seenupin Road in Esquimalt, B.C. Mr. Ilett was riding northbound on the shoulder of Admirals Road nearing Seenupin Road. The shoulder was marked by a single solid white line on both sides of the road.
One way of preparing for a traffic ticket dispute is to request disclosure from the officer who issued it. It was relatively rare to receive such a request but when one did appear the disputant often asked for everything, including the tread depth of the right rear tire on the police car. It was fairly clear that the request was based on advice found on the internet rather than obtained from a lawyer. Disclosing less than what was requested (but still reasonable in the circumstances) resulted in complaints to the justice at the hearing.
To brief you in the story: was driving my car without a front license plate. Was stopped at the roadblock and had a conversation with an officer, who mentioned that I don't have a front license plate number and asked me to install it asap and wished me a good way. Next officer which was in 2 meters down the road stopped me too and asked me why don't a have a license plate number and issued my a ticket. I decided to dispute the allegation.
I have been a property owner in Mirror Lake BC for over 5 years & have yet to see any speeding related citations being created here. Hwy 31 at Mirror lake is posted 50 kmh but rarely see anyone obeying the speed limit.
The article that I wrote two weeks ago concerning solving your own road safety problems prompted an inquiry from the East Kootenays. The writer complained that a section of Highway 31A leaving the town of New Denver was marked with a 50 zone ends speed sign and the next kilometre or so of the road had many driveways, some intersections, a pedestrian crossing for a public trail and was regularly used by cyclists and pedestrians.
The question this week revolves around vehicle noise in quiet neighbourhoods. Why don’t the municipalities do more about it asks my correspondent. This may be a case of the squeaky wheel not getting the grease!
