The Accident Research Centre at Monash University, Australia, has released a report that explores community attitudes towards current speed limits and examines some of the reasons for these attitudes. The majority surveyed were in favour of reducing speed limits on two lane 100km/h undivided rural roads and on rural gravel roads, but only about one third supported lower limits in urban areas at this time.
What is the purpose of completely coming to a stop at a 3 or 4 way stop when there are no vehicles or pedestrians near the intersection? A rolling stop should be sufficient, as MOST drivers including professional drivers never completely stop. There are at least 3 good reasons for NOT coming to a complete stop. I cannot think of one good reason for coming to a COMPLETE stop.
Place two average adult feet side by side on a piece of paper and draw a box around their edges. The area of this box is about the same as the area of your tires in contact with the road on an average automobile. Tires are your only contact with the highway, and collisions result when that contact is lost.
The case of Chen v Beltran involves 11 year old Allan Chen who was riding his skateboard on a steep sidewalk beside 10th Street in New Westminster. He could not stop on reaching the intersection with Royal Avenue and rode into the path of traffic where he was struck by a car driven by Juan Beltran. Chen sustained injuries and took legal action via his guardian in an attempt recover damages for them.
It's been a surprise to many people over the years, but you don't have to be actually driving a motor vehicle when your ability to drive is impaired by alcohol or a drug to be convicted of that offence. Simply being able to set the vehicle in motion, engine running or not, may be enough for a conviction because you have care and control of the motor vehicle while you are impaired.

This column is dedicated to the middle aged male driver who turned left in the intersection and completed the turn half way into my lane as I approached him and half way into the lane that he was supposed to be using. Was he being inattentive, careless or did he not know any better?
I have been ticketed for crossing a double yellow line just before the end of the right hand lane in a passing zone. The reason for this manoeuvre was I had been in the right lane and catching up to another vehicle, I switched to the left lane to overtake the slower moving vehicle, I estimate the speed variation to be around 30 KPH.
Mirror, signal, shoulder check, change is the chant that we all know to follow for a successful lane change. We also use our rearview mirrors to give us a better view than our eyes alone when we are backing up. Is this all that mirrors are used for and are these the only times that we use them?
